Third Annual Sticker Shock Campaign: "Those Who Host Lose the Most"

The Way Out West Coalition is gearing up to spread the message of creating a safer, unified, drugfree Buckeye by hosting the third annual Sticker Shock campaign on March 7, 2012.  Coalition members and youth from the WoW Peer Leadership program will visiting local retailers and area restaurants to place magnets and postcards in area businesses encouraging parents to not provide alcohol to anyone under 21.

The new Social Host ordinance passed in Buckeye, AZ in March of 2011 is a law that prohibits adults from hosting a party, gathering or event where minors are consuming alcohol.  The ordinance has civil penalties and/or criminal penalties.

Youth Town Hall Promoted in West Valley View

Beth Hastings knows that when her students leave school each day, they are at risk.

Teens can make many decisions that are potentially destructive and one of the most prevalent is drinking alcohol, the high school teacher said.

"The average age for the first drink among kids in Buckeye is 13; that's before they get to me in high school," Hastings said.

Hastings has helped sponsor a chapter of Students Against Destructive Decisions at Youngker High School in Buckeye. The group was selected from a national database to hold a town hall on underage drinking. The event will be at 6 p.m. Thursday. Youngker High School is at 3000 S. Apache Road in Buckeye.

"I think it's huge for the community. It will bring the community into our school and hopefully form partnerships," Hastings said.

Research shows in Buckeye, 82 percent of youths report drinking. Among youths, 43 percent say they drink alcohol at parties when parents are away. The average age of first drug use is 13 years old. About one out of four students in Buckeye is using prescription medications to get high.

Undercover Sting for Compliance Checks in AZ Republic

Four Buckeye businesses were cited last month in the sale of alcohol to a minor as part of a sting operation by the Buckeye Police Department and state Department of Liquor Licenses and Control.

They were:

  • Liquor Corral, 419 E. Monroe Ave.
  • Mike's Liquor, 210 W. Baseline Road.
  • Chevron gas station, 1419 N. Jackrabbit Trail.
  • Waddell's Longhorn Corral, 1629 N. 195th Ave.

On March 19, an undercover minor working with the departments went into six businesses in the town and attempted to buy alcohol, police said. Four sold the minor alcohol.

Employees at each business were cited for failure to check identification and selling alcohol to an underage person, both Class 2 misdemeanors. The charges were submitted to the town prosecutor and carry a maximum of four months in jail and $750 fine per count.

Coalition of the Quarter

The Way Out West (WOW) coalition was formed in November 2008, as a result of a collaborative project through the Partnership for a Drug Free America and Youth Evaluation & Treatment Centers (YETC). The WOW coalition is focused in the town of Buckeye, but also draws from the Verrado and Rainbow Valley communities. The Partnership for a Drug Free America, its Arizona affiliate and YETC began building capacity and collecting the necessary data for a comprehensive community needs assessment. Utilizing the Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) to guide its work, the coalition identified underage drinking as the community’s current substance use issue. One of the greatest strengths of the WOW coalition is its passionate and committed members, and the youth and families of the greater Buckeye Valley. Through broad sector representation, the coalition has been able to reach out to the community as a whole and unite them in an effort that affects the overall health and safety of their community. By having a coalition, members are actively involved in the SPF process. From gathering data to implementation of the strategies, the WOW coalition has insured its sustainability and member retention. The enthusiasm and support for this coalition cannot be expressed enough. This is a community that is engaged, wants change, and wants a healthier, safer environment for their children. The WOW coalition is currently working on a few key strategies focusing on environmental and individual change. A social host ordinance is currently before the city council. The WOW coalition has teamed up with Golden Eagle distributers to implement the ‘Prevent, Don’t Provide’ sticker shock campaign where youth placed stickers in over 23 sites, including restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores and others. The event was very successful! Also, two peer leadership groups have developed at the local high schools, and they have started Students Against Destructive Decision groups on campus. The WOW coalition meets at noon on the 2nd Tuesday of every month at the Buckeye Valley Chamber of Commerce, 508 E. Monroe. Please contact Paul Martinez at: 623-707-5371— Everyone is welcome!
